Procreate Tutorials: 1. Getting Started with Procreate

What is Procreate?

Procreate is a digital illustration app that you can use, on an Apple iPad, to create just about any type of artwork or digital image you can imagine. It’s relatively easy to use, super user-friendly and very affordable (with a one time app purchase).

Using an iPad, Apple Pencil and the Procreate app, you can mimic traditional media (such as watercolour and gouache paints, ink pens and graphite pencils) to create digital art that can be shared electronically. You can use Procreate to create drawings and illustrations to use in presentations or on webpages. It’s just a great, versatile, tool to create digital illustrations.

Procreate Tutorial Series

This is the first in a series of tutorials about using Procreate. You can expect to see tutorials demonstrating how to use all the features the app has to offer. The focus will be on creating illustrations to use in a variety of contexts (presentations, on social media or on your website).

Future blog posts will explain how to use the different tools available in Procreate’s user interface. Tapping on the paintbrush tool (see below) is the quickest way to start drawing. After some experimentation, you will discover your favourite brushes. I used the “Gesinski ink” brush in the ‘Inking” section of the Paintbrush dropdown area to annotate the screenshots you see in this blog post.
