Procreate Tutorials: 3. Use the Eyedropper Tool in Procreate

What is the Eyedropper?

The Eyedropper is a tool in Procreate that allows you to identify and choose a colour from a previous illustration/canvas or from a photo. For instance, if you made an illustration and wanted to use the same colour palette you used for that illustration on another illustration, you could use the Eyedropper to select a particular colour on your illustration and then use that colour on a new canvas. You can even make a new custom palette with the colours from your previous artwork or from a photo, so that you can use this palette for future work.

Benefits/Uses of the Eyedropper

  1. Able to select a colour from your past illustration and use that exact colour on a new canvas.

  2. Able to select colours from an image or photograph and use those exact colours to create an illustration.

How to Use the Eyedropper

Follow the five steps below to learn how to use the Eyedropper tool. In the following example, you will learn how to select a colour on the canvas and then use that colour to fill in the edges of the artwork.

You can try this out using a photo on your iPad or a picture of your own art. In the top right corner of the main screen of the Procreate interface, selecting “Photo” and choosing a photo from your Photo Library will create a canvas using the photo you selected.

Following steps 1-5 will help you become familiar with using the Eyedropper tool.
